The cost of health care generally reflects the knowledge, experience and on-going training of the health professional, and the quality of care and attention you will receive. Seeing an exercise physiologist is investing in your health and the results may last a lifetime.
Exercise physiologists are university trained health professionals, holding registration with Medicare and accreditation with Exercise & Sport Science Australia. They are experts in designing and delivering safe and effective exercise programmes for people with health concerns, medical conditions, injuries, or disabilities.
You may only require a couple of appointments to get the advice and the programme you require or you may need a few more to establish safe exercise guidelines, manage any risks associated with exercise or just to build your confidence and motivation.
Please find a summary of costs below. Services provided without a Medicare referral are subject to a GST charge.
Many private health funds will provide cover for exercise physiology services, however the amount will depend on the type and level of cover you have and your annual limit. If your private health insurance does cover for exercise physiology, you may be able to claim the cost of exercise physiology consults as well as group classes. You may wish to speak to your provider directly for more information.
We process all health fund claims through our HICAPS terminal and you simply pay the gap amount with your EFTPOS, credit card or cash when paying for your appointment.
All of our exercise physiologists at Health and Hearts are registered with Medicare. To make a claim with Medicare, you will require a specific referral from your doctor through Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management (CDM) initiative.
Medicare claiming is done at the time of the appointment via HICAPS terminal. Payment for the appointment is made up front with EFTPOS, credit card or cash and rebates are returned back onto your EFTPOS card. Payment from Medicare Australia may take a day to return into your account.
Formally known as Enhanced Primary Care or EPC, the CDM programme links you with allied health professionals such as exercise physiologists, dieticians, and podiatrists to provide a multi-disciplinary, team-based approach to your health care. The Australian government recognises the importance of lifestyle changes such as physical activity and exercise in the management of chronic health conditions and provides Medicare rebates towards the costs of these consultations.
If you are diagnosed with two or more conditions that have lasted for 6 months or more, you may be eligible to participate in Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management (CDM) initiative and be referred to an exercise physiologist. Chronic conditions may include, but are not limited to:
To find out if you are eligible for this programme you will need to make a long appointment with your doctor. You can also find more information on the Medicare website by following the link below.
