Meet our team of highly knowledgeable and experienced Exercise Physiologists

Heather McFarlane

Owner, Accredited Exercise Physiologist

Heather has been the proud owner of Health & Hearts since its establishment in 2007.  She has over 14 years’ experience as an Exercise Physiologist in both hospital and private practice.  During this time Heather has seen the role of an exercise physiologist grow to become a recognised allied health profession with Medicare and Private Health Insurers and develop respect and recognition from other medical and health practitioners in the community.

Heather has advised thousands of clients with chronic illness such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis to achieve healthier lives with physical activity and exercise.

Heather has a bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science from JCU and a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Exercise Physiology.  She is an accredited exercise physiologist and exercise scientist with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA).  She has held registration as a sports trainer with Sports Medicine Australia, and gym instructor with Fitness Australia.

Although only working part-time since the birth of second son in 2017, she continues to be a core member of the Health & Hearts team working with operational, financial and management structures, mentoring  young exercise physiologists and working with clients to design and implement exercise programmes.

Megan Keelan

Megan joined Health and Hearts officially 2 years ago but has been part of the team for years after a couple of locum stints.  After graduating from James Cook University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology Megan’s professional experience started with the Far North Queensland Division of General Practice working in regional and remote communities designing and implementing community programmes such as cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation and Diabetes Australia’s Beat-IT programme.

More recently she worked as regional exercise physiologist for Diabetes NSW.  She ran numerous community based programmes and events across southern NSW educating people on the importance of exercise for the management of type 2 diabetes.  She was also worked closely with children with Type 1 Diabetes.

Megan has recently welcomed the birth of her first child and is currently on maternity leave.

Sara Vanden-Bergh

Accredited Exercise Physiologist

Sara has had lifelong interest in sport and fitness and was naturally drawn to study a degree in Exercise and Sport Science at UQ.  She graduated in 2012 with Honors and a Major in Clinical Exercise Physiology.

Prior to joining Health and Hearts in 2018, her professional experience as an exercise physiologist has included a variety of roles including occupational health and wellbeing co-ordination, individual and group exercise prescription for chronic conditions and healthy lifestyle programmes.

Sara has a passion for performance coaching and athlete development and has experience developing strength and conditioning programmes for men’s and women’s QBL squads and high performance programmes and coaching with Acceleration Australia.  She also understands the importance of appropriate exercise for all levels of fitness and has enjoyed being part of a client’s journey to achieve the positive impact from exercise.

Sara holds accreditation with ESSA, has extended her training to achieve Pilates Matwork recognition and coaching accreditation with Queensland government, hockey Australia and Basketball QLD.

Jacqui Zelenka

Accredited Exercise Physiologist

Jacqui is the newest member to join the Health and Hearts team.  She was offered employment after a stand-out performance during her practiuum placement while studying her Masters in Clinical Exercise Physiology in 2018.

Since graduating from Mackay’s St Parick’s College in 2009, Jacqui has dedicated her life to basketball and a career as a health professional.  Jacqui was granted a full sporting and academic scholarship to play college basketball in the US while studying a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science at Southwest Baptist University, Missouri.  After graduating, she returned to Australia and played basketball professionally in Townsville during their back to back winning seasons and then joined the Mackay Meteorettes in 2017 and has held a captain’s role since.

Jacqui’s professional experience  includes working as physiotherapist assistant working with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal rehabilitation and she is now enjoying pursuing additional professional development in the area of cardiac pathology and prescription.

Jacqui holds accreditation with Exercise Sport Science Australia (ESSA).
